FUNDAMENTAL AND APPLIED ISSUES OF ECOLOGY AND EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY

An international conference entitled "Fundamental and Applied Issues of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology" was organized by the Ecology Department, Faculty of Biology, National University of Mongolia (NUM) on April 25, 2008 within the activities to commemorate the Department's 20th anniversary. A total of 11 papers by 31 different authors of different geographic regions and 16 posters (See the Agenda) were discussed at the conference. Proceedings of the conference that included 37 full papers and extended abstracts was published ahead of time and distributed at the registration. Authors of these submitted papers included various academic, government and non-government organizations from different countries such as Austria, China, Germany, the Netherlands, Russia, Singapore, USA, and of course, Mongolia.

In his opening remarks, Professor R. Samiya, Vice President for Research and International Affairs, NUM, emphasized that ecology was a fundamental scientific field and its terms and concepts were regularly misused in Mongolia and that the Ecology Department had the leading role to shape the landscape of ecological research and education in the country. Professor M. Tsogbadrakh, Dean of the Faculty of Biology, NUM, congratulated for the 20th anniversary of the Department and wished the success and prosperity for the department that will translate into the better generation of ecologists.

At the end of the conference, it was decided that the Conference accomplished its general purpose, which was to serve as a platform for researchers of different backgrounds to exchange information and to learn from each other; and that it should become a regular event. Therefore, the Ecology Department has taken the responsibility to organize this conference once in every two-year period, but with a specific research topic at each time.
